Brisbane Girls Grammar Second Chance Committee Update

This year has got off to a flying start for the Brisbane Girls Grammar Schools’ Second Chance Committee. The girls this term have organised stalls to fundraise and raise awareness about homeless women within the Brisbane community.

Our first project of the term was our annual Valentine’s Day bake stall which required girls in the committee to bake yummy goods for sale. The fundraiser was a great success and nearly $1000 was raised on the day.

Dr dale Spender visited the school in late February and spoke on assembly about the importance of community service. Dr Spender’s speech was very insightful and well received.

March saw the celebration of International Women’s Day. Second Chance representatives from Brisbane Girls Grammar School attended the International Women’s Day Breakfast held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. At the breakfast, students were lucky enough to hear from inspirational speakers such as The Honourable Anna Bligh MP Premier of Queensland. The Lord Mayor of Brisbane – Councillor Campbell Newman, Her Excellency, the Governor of Queensland, Ms Penelope Wesley and the key note speaker, the first female justice appointed into the high court of Botswana, Justice Unity Dow. On campus, committee members sold International Women’s Day merchandise and had a stall at lunch to raise awareness, and to give girls the opportunity to participate in organised activities.

At the end of this term, representatives from Zig Zag visited the committee to speak to the girls about what the organisation does in the community and the realities of homelessness and working with the homeless. The girls had the opportunity to ask questions about the nature of their work and some very interesting and thought provoking discussions were had. We look forward to further developing a relationship with Zig Zag next term.

In Term Two the committee has a number of plans including organising a pamper evening at Pindari Women’s Service, taking part in a national short film competition on youth homelessness, setting up a postcard art project with local services and organising comprehensive welcome packs for recently housed women to help set them up in their new homes.
